As Managing Director, Alex Smith works closely with individuals and families to help them navigate important financial decisions. In his role as the team’s lead investment manager, he oversees portfolio construction, asset allocation, and investment strategy. Alex prioritizes supporting clients when they need it most and providing thoughtful guidance to support their financial future.
Alex joined Baird’s equity research department in 1995, where he developed investment strategies for Baird advisors across the nation and was a member of the firm’s stock selection committee. In 2002, he transitioned to Private Wealth Management, focusing on delivering tailored advice and ongoing portfolio guidance to clients. What stands out most about Baird, he feels, is the culture, camaraderie, and the people.
Prior to Baird, Alex served in the United States military as a Naval Flight Engineer on board a P-3 Orion reconnaissance aircraft and is a Gulf War veteran. His time in the military instilled a disciplined, mission-driven approach that continues to guide his work today. Alex is a member of PATRIOT, Baird’s veteran-focused associate resource group.

More About Alex
Outside of work, Alex enjoys distance running, hiking, and international travel. Notably, he has completed 13 marathons, including four overseas, and has traveled to six of the seven continents. Alex lives in Milwaukee with his wife Kate and has two adult children.

Spend a year or two on the road and camp his way across the entire United States visiting as many national and state parks, and historical sites as possible.
